Beech in the meadow to be removed
As part of our on-going maintenance of the woodland, one of the large beech trees in the meadow needs to taken down for safety reasons. We are sorry to see such an old tree taken from the landscape, but it was damaged by fire several years ago and its condition has been getting steadily worse. It could have been possible to leave the stem standing for wildlife value, as we do elsewhere on site, but on balance we decided that the views in this area were a really important part of the enjoyment of the site and that a large standing stem would spoil this. We are planting trees in the meadow each year to ensure there will be large trees here in the future, as well as today.
Removal will take place on the 28th and 29th March by Midland Forestry. Logs will be put in the Lightwoods Hill car park which can be taken for firewood in return for a donation. Chippings will be used to feed the soil around the veteran beech tree near the Abbey site during one of the next Volunteer Sundays or Mondays.
