May Update

‘Pride and Prejudice’ will be performed in the Woods on Friday July 1st by the Heartbreak Theatre Company. Tickets will be on sale in the shop or online:   (There is no fee for booking online) £12 for adults, £8 children, £35 for 2 adults and 2 children. On Thursday 23rd June we will be having a History evening. There will be displays about the history of the Woods and members of the Smethwick History Society will be there to talk informally about the history of the site. We are hoping to have old postcards and other pictures available, as well as our copy of Repton’s Red Book which was the original document leading to the landscaping of the Park. Also, if you have old photos of the park please bring them along to share with others. The evening starts at 7.30 and no booking is required.

Many thanks to Lisa and Gordon, 2 of our members who have recently married, and who asked for donations to the Trust rather than wedding presents. They have given us £1400 which is a fabulous gesture of support. The Woods is a special place for so many people and if you’d also like to make a donation for a special event or in memory of someone please contact the office and talk to Viv or Kathy. Walk for the Woods was a great success with over £1900 being raised—considerably more than last year. Thanks to all who took part—let’s make it even bigger next year!

The Green Play Rangers will be in the park on 3 dates in June: Thursday 2nd from 11am—4 pm; 9th from 3.30 to 5.30 pm; and 16th from 3.30 pm—5.30 pm. Drop in and drop out as you wish. We have 2 new leaflets available. A Bird Identification Booklet prepared by the Wildlife Trust and showing 12 different birds that can be seen in the woods; also a booklet about The Wilderness, again prepared by the Wildlife Trust and with illustrations of the various flora and fauna that can be seen there. These are free and are available from the shop or office. Steve Hodgkinson from the Wildlife Trust is going to lead a course on making rustic fences on July 1-2. This is free. If you are interested in learning this skill please contact Viv at the office for more details.

We will be having the Volunteers Thank You Evening on Wednesday June 1st at 7 pm. This is an opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered for the Trust over the last year, and refreshments are provided. Volunteers should be receiving their invitations shortly. The play area drainage has now been done and we hope that there will be no more puddles!! Also we have 7 new dog bins and they will be put in over the next few weeks. The park is a very busy place – apart from the regular activities there have been 6 schools visits over the last 3 weeks— mainly looking at the Wilderness and how that is developing. They used the new leaflet to help identify the various plants there. Thanks to Liz Coleman and Steve Hodgkinson for the highly informative bird identification day last Saturday. Maybe we can repeat this in the future. Finally don’t forget the Big Prize Draw where the prize is a new Fiat 500. Tickets (£2) are available by following this link  or from the Trust shop.
