August Update

If you haven’t already done so, Vote for Warley Woods as your favourite park in the People’s Choice Awards managed by the Green Flag Awards consortium.  Go here and vote now.  As things currently stand we have a good chance of winning the gold medal so please do vote and ask your friends too as well.

Roger Haslam, one of our very longstanding greenkeepers, is retiring after well over 40 years working at Warley Woods.   We wish him all the best for the future and will miss his dedication to the job.  Hopefully he will have time to play more golf now.  Meanwhile, we are looking for a new Deputy Head Greenkeeper and Park Supervisor to replace Roger.  More details about the vacancy are available here (scroll to the bottom of the page).  Closing date is September 5th.

The Trust AGM will be held on Saturday October  15th  at 2 pm in the Pavilion.  All members are invited to attend to hear about the work that has been going on over the last year and to ask questions of the Trustees and staff.    It is at the AGM that we elect our Trustees for the coming year. One third of the current trustees stand down and can put themselves forward for re-election, but we are always looking for other members who might want to get involved..  Going to Board Meetings and volunteering in this way is not for everyone, but if you love Warley Woods and think that this is an area where you can give something to the Trust, please contact the office and they can provide more details and an opportunity to talk to one of the current trustees.

We have recently had a spate of petty vandalism round the Pavilion, including 2 break-ins and the hedge at the front of the building being set on fire.  We have decided to switch off the lights round the building at night to try and discourage the groups who congregate there, although this does mean that it is darker for people coming to meetings.
On  Sunday September 11th we are having our annual dog event, All About Dogs. This will be held from 11 am to 4 pm in the meadow. There will be a dog show, dog agility competitions, micro chipping for £5 and lots of stalls and other events.  Thanks to local estate agent, Derek Spires, who has sponsored the event.  We are looking for one final judge who can choose the Dog most like its Owner. So if you’d like to have a try at being a judge please get in touch with Viv at the office, 420 1061. Also If you have any second hand books or tombola prizes for these stalls at the event please drop them in to the shop or office.

Despite clashing with the Thimblemill Brook bat night our Bat Event on August 17th was very well attended and much enjoyed.  Chris Sherlock from Brumbats gave an entertaining and informative talk before well over 70 people ventured out with their bat detectors.  Fortunately the bats weren’t scared off and we enjoyed watching them whizzing about searching for insects.  An event enjoyed both by adults and children.

Finally—don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets for the Big Prize Draw and have chance of winning a Fiat 500. Tickets are £2 and £1.90 comes straight to the Trust to help our funds.  So it’s a possible win for you and a definite win for the Trust! You have until mid September to buy you tickets which are available from the shop or online here.
