Big Holes in the Meadow?
Some big holes will appear in the meadow on 23rd or 24th February. These are ready for our special tree planting event on Sunday 26th February -during our Volunteer Sunday session. We have had problems with the replacement trees we plant in this wide open area being vandalised, even several years after they have been planted and so we are trialling the planting of three much larger trees than usual. We are also trialling an underground staking system as well. The only problem is these bigger trees weigh a quarter of a tonne each and need a really big hole – too much to be handled by our volunteers alone. So staff from South Staffordshire Plc are helping us out with digging the holes and supervising the transfer of the trees. Our volunteers will deal with the staking, backfilling and mulching.
The purchase of the big trees has been made possible thanks to wedding present donations made to Lisa and Gordon Whittaker in April last year. This planting day part of a bigger project, funded by the Big Tree Plant which has also seen Abbey Junior School and St Greg’s Primary School plant over 100 small trees into the woodland earlier this month. They are supporting the project over the next four years.
