End of March update
The Easter Event is going to be bigger and better this year! As usual there will be the Decorated Egg competition (bring your decorated hard-boiled egg with you); the Easter Egg Treasure Hunt; the Children’s Egg Roll (bring your own hard boiled egg to roll). In addition this year we are having an Adults’ Egg Roll. So many of the parents last year seemed to want to take part that we thought we’d give them their chance this year! The event is on Easter Monday, April 9th, starting at 11 am. Come to the top of the meadow by Upper St Mary’s Road and register any time from 10.30 onwards. Cost is £1 per activity. There will also be things going on in the Pavilion when children have completed the trail.
There’s lots going on in May:- Oral History Story Share on Wednesday 2nd at 7.30 pm; Tree Walk led by Chris Shortis on Saturday 12th at 10 am; Learn to Identify Birds Training day on Saturday 19th May from 10 am to 2pm; Volunteer Thank you Evening on Tuesday 22nd at 7 pm; Dawn Chorus Walk on Saturday 28th at 5 am. All these either start at the Pavilion or take place in the Pavilion. For more details please contact the office 420 1061.
Now some bad news. The swings in the play area have been very badly chewed by dogs. We think that this is happening in the evenings and is being done deliberately. If you see this happening please can you take a description of the dog (and owner if possible) and note the time and day and let the office or shop staff know. We can then share this with the police in an attempt to try and catch those who are responsible (420 1061 office; 429 2440 shop). Thank you.
April 4th to 8th is the US Masters Golf in Augusta, Georgia. We will be having our own competitions here at Warley Woods. The monthly medal competition for golf club members will be the Masters Medal and take place on Saturday/Sunday 7th and 8th April. There will be a Juniors’ Easter Masters Camp on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 4th, 5th and 6th with Greg Lynch, our golf professional. Also any golfer who plays during this period can enter their scorecard into a Prize Draw. Finally there will be quizzes, word searches etc taking place throughout the week in the café for anyone to enter. So come along and join in the fun!
You may have seen on Abbey Road that part of our fence was destroyed by a car which went in to it a few weeks ago. Because the driver had no insurance we are not able to get the money back through this means and we are having to bear the cost of repair ourselves. This is going to be over £6000, and the work will be done as soon as possible.
Our veteran beech tree is looking very sick, despite our best efforts over the last couple of years to revive it. So this year is really the last throw of the dice….. We are going to give it a sugar boost. We are looking for donations of bags of sugar which can be used to make a solution and fed to the tree at the end of April. If you’d like to do your part in trying to save this beautiful and ancient tree please bring bags of sugar to the shop as soon as possible. We’ll then let you know when we are going to do the ‘feeding’. As previously mentioned we are going to replace the tiles on the fountain with cedar shingles. Viv has done 4 funding applications to try and meet the cost of this and we will hear the results of these applications some time from May onwards. Obviously the sooner we can get this work done the better.
Thanks to Sandwell MBC we should soon be the owners of a new mower for the semi rough areas of the golf course. The cost of the mower is £27000 and we have been given a grant by Sandwell to replace our old one which is worn out. The groundstaff are very pleased!
Walk for the Woods made it to Tipperary and back as far as Stourbridge – well over 400 miles! Many thanks to all those groups and individuals who took part. We took in over £550 on the day and there is still a lot more sponsorship money to come in.
Just 2 further dates for your diary. On Thursday June 14th we will again be welcoming Heartbreak Theatre Company who will be giving a performance of Much Ado about Nothing. This event is sponsored by Derek Spires, a local estate agent
