January Update

Come and join The Mad Hatter’s Walk for the Woods on Saturday March 2nd. We are inviting participants to come dressed in a special hat, or in costumes from either of the ‘Alice’ books, and walk round the woods to raise money for the Trust. So let your imaginations get to work—Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Dormouse, The Queen of Hearts, The Walrus and the Carpenter or anyone else you would like to choose!  The maddest costume or hat will win 2 tickets for Heartbreak  Theatre’s production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which will take place in the Woods on Sunday June 16th.  In all the excitement of dressing up please don’t forget that the  purpose of the Walk (our FOURTH one this year) is to raise money to help towards the maintenance of the park, so we are asking you to get sponsors, and/or pledge to give a donation yourself.  Sponsorship forms will be available on line and in the shop/office from next week.  There will also be a prize draw which will include everyone who raises over  £100.   You can start the walk any time between 10 am and 2 pm, and do as many circuits as you like.  Last year the most was  10 miles, so it would be good to exceed that this year.   More details will be available shortly, but check with the office any time (420 1061).
As mentioned above this year’s Theatre in the Woods will be a performance of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and will be held at 3 pm on Sunday June 13th.  There will be an opportunity for children to get involved—more details will be available nearer the time.
Our next event is the annual Birdwalk which will take place on Saturday January 26th  at 10 am starting from the Pavilion.  This coincides with the RSPB’s annual garden bird watch and enables us to look for and record the species that are currently around the site.  The walk will be led by Liz Coleman, RSPB and Warley Woods volunteer, and there will be a small charge of £1.50  for adults. Children free.
Stargazing is back!  If you are enjoying the television programmes  this week why not come and see the stars through the Birmingham Astronomical Society’s telescopes? They will be at the Pavilion on Friday February 15th between 6 pm and 9 pm and everyone is welcome to come. There will be a small charge which will include a hot drinks.
It’s not too late for New Year Resolutions.  Make it your resolution to come and help at the Volunteers’ Sessions on Sundays and Mondays.  The Sunday volunteers meet on the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 10.30 am to 12.30 and the Monday volunteers  meet on the first and third Mondays from 2 pm to 4 pm.  The jobs are very varied, and you can do as much or as little as you want.  Come whenever you can—and you will be sure of a warm welcome.
The Trust income has really been affected this year by the awful weather reducing the golf income by many thousands of pounds.  The good news is that the course is open and drying out nicely, so come and play whenever you can—you’ll be very welcome!     Drainage work will be starting on the fourth green either next week or the week after and we’re hoping that that will improve the green for the coming years.
Sale on in the Warley Woods shop! Cards, jigsaws, jelly cat toys all at reduced prices—come and help us clear our stock to make space for new cards and creatures.  All the income from the shop helps pay for the maintenance of the site or text us a donation:  Text WWCT22  £(your donation amount) to 70070. Every penny helps! Thank you.
