The Mad Hatter’s Walk for the Woods is fast approaching and we’re hoping that lots of our supporters will join us on Saturday March 2nd to walk, run, jog your way round the mile circuit through the woods and park as many times as you like! You can dress in costume or wear a Mad Hat if you want—Viv’s outfit is well worth seeing (below) – and there are sponsorship forms available on the website or from the shop. You will be entered for a prize draw if you get sponsorship of over £100. At the end of the walk there will be an everlasting tea party for all those who participate in the event when tea and cakes will be served. So please come and join in—we raised over £2000 last year and want to do better this time. You can start any time between 10 am and 2 pm. Please come to the Pavilion to register.
Calling all tree planters. Warley Woods Volunteers are planting 2 largish oak trees in the meadow this Saturday morning, February 23rd and need help to do this. If you can spare an hour or two from 10.30 am please come to the Pavilion and meet up with the volunteers co-ordinating the event.
The Oral History Project volunteers are continuing to interview people who have stories to tell about Warley Woods. We are still looking for more interviewees, however, particularly those who remember going inside the Abbey, those who worked here and those who have played golf here. Don’t think you have to talk for a long time, even short interviews are worth having if the story is interesting—and the stories we have so far are very interesting. So don’t be shy, come and talk to Viv or Kathy in the office or leave your details at the shop, and we will get in touch with you.
We now have a Warley Woods i-calendar. This can be linked to the calendar on your phone or computer so that you have a note of the events that are taking place at the Woods—and then there will be no excuse for not knowing what is going on. We have tried this out and it seems to work OK, so see if it works for you. Download it here.
Now that spring is coming and more people are playing golf we are beginning to get complaints about dogs on the course. We would ask that if you are walking your dog round that part of the site you use the perimeter path and/or the tarmac path that leads to the Wilderness. Golf balls can be dangerous both for you and your dog, and there is plenty of space in the rest of the park where the dogs can be allowed to run freely. Our golf income is fundamentally important to be able to afford to manage the whole site well, and so we really need lots of happy golfers for the success of Warley Woods as a whole. Thanks for helping with this.
The Easter Event is being planned as in previous years. It will take place on Easter Monday, April 1st, starting at 11 am (registration from 10.30). As usual there will be Easter egg rolls for children and—back by popular demand– for adults as well. For this you will need to bring along a hard boiled egg. If you want to decorate it first it can then be entered for the Best decorated egg competition. There will also be the Treasure Hunt ending at the Pavilion where food and drinks will be available in the café. Hope to see you there.
Finally, one or two reminders. Volunteer Sundays take place on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 10.30am, and Volunteer Mondays on the first and third Mondays of each month at 2 m. You don’t have to commit to regular attendance—just come when you can and you’ll be very welcome.
Alice in Wonderland is the outdoor play this year, performed again by Heartbreak productions. It is on Sunday afternoon, June 16th at 3 pm. A date for your diary!
