The Trust has been very heartened over the last 2 weeks by the tremendous response from the people of Bearwood and beyond to the destruction of 5 of our memorial benches, four by fire. Many people have sent money to help with replacing the benches or offered to raise funds at their place of work. A recent cake sale raised money, Nigel Lloyd from Warley Woods Pacers is doing the Great North Run and has asked people to sponsor him, and others are wondering what they can do to help. We don’t understand why some people are so destructive, but we do know that the majority of our community condemn such behaviour and rally round when such events occur. So thank you for your support to those who have given, and if you would like to donate you can either text WWCT22 £(your donation) to 70070, give a donation via the website (e-mail us to tell us it’s for the benches), or sponsor Nigel by signing the form in the shop.
For the fifth year running we have been awarded the Green Flag, given to the best managed parks and open spaces in the UK, and thanks are due to all the staff and volunteers for continuing to care for the park and woods so well. We asked for detailed feedback from the judges to learn what we could do better and this has been sent to us. Over the next few months the Trust will be seeing which of these ideas they can take forward at minimum cost as there is not money in the budget to do all the things suggested.
On Monday, August 19th, the veteran beech tree will be felled. While we are sad to see it go we need to take the opportunity to look at ways in which the wood from the tree can be used and also decide what can replace the tree for the future. Your ideas about this will be most welcome, and if you would like to come and watch the tree fellers at work there will be a Trust tent with information about trees from Chris Shortis our tree advisor, games for children, and three woodworkers demonstrating their skills. There will also be information about volunteering for the Trust and you will be welcome any time from 10 am onwards.
Our annual Bat walk, led by Chris from Brumbats, is taking place on Friday 16th, starting at 9pm. Drinks will be available beforehand if you would like to come a bit earlier, and Chris usually brings things for you to look at until the evening has got dark enough for the bats to be out and about. Cost is £3 per adult, free for children, and this includes drinks and the use of bat detectors.
All About Dogs will take place on Sunday September 8th, from 11 am to 4 pm. There are lots of stalls this year, and we would welcome donations for our tombola and second hand book stalls. If you are able to donate anything please bring it to the shop (off Lightwoods Hill) which is open 7 days a week. Thank you to Fastsigns for sponsoring this event.
We’re pleased to announce that Kelvin Walker has been appointed as our new Golf Course and Park Manager to replace Lionel Rushton who retires in September after over 40 years in the job. Kelvin, who has been Lionel’s deputy for the last 2 years, will be taking on a broader role and has said he is looking forward to the new challenges.
The Trust AGM will take place on Saturday October 12th at 2pm at the Pavilion. The meeting is the opportunity for members to have their say and to question the trustees and staff about the activities over the last year. Members will receive notification and further details in early September. If you are reading this and are not a member please do consider joining. Application forms are available on the Documents and Leaflets page.
The shop in the Pavilion is developing partnerships with local businesses. For a while we have been selling some Crafty Muthas products and now we have jams, pickles and chutneys from Maiden’s Fayre, dog products from Nanny Jo’s, Lifelites from Michaela Hinton and a great selection of plants from Urban Herbs. If you have locally produced things to sell please contact Sharon in the shop (429 2440) and talk to her about the opportunities available.
Finally a reminder to all golfers – the £6 after 6 pm offer is continuing until the end of September. So put those clubs in your car before you go to work and then you can come straight up at the end of the day and unwind in the beautiful setting of Warley Woods Golf Course.
