End of September update
This is your last chance to vote for Warley Woods as the UK’s favourite park. Voting closes on September 30th so please follow this link and cast your vote now. It’s very easy and won’t take more than a few seconds. We’ve been second in the vote for the last 2 years—and this year we want to win, so every vote counts! Thank you.
This autumn we will be embarking on a woodland project to enable us to improve 3 areas of woodland on the site. These areas are all along Barclay Road and involve the felling of some failing silver birch trees near the Lightwoods Hill end, and thinning of the beech trees planted in the 1950s at the school end. The project will run over two years and we hope that it will provide for regeneration and new understorey. The project is supported by Defra, DCLG, Environment Agency, Forestry Commission and Natural England. More information is available on the post below this one.
Ever wondered which fungi are poisonous and which can be eaten? Join Bill Moodie, Trust member and fungi expert, for a walk round the woods on Saturday October 5th at 10 am. There is a small charge of £2 for adults. Free for children. Meet at the Pavilion.
Thanks to the volunteers who helped at the Trust stand last Saturday at the exhibition of ‘Bearwood, Past, Present and Future’. We often have stalls at events and if you would be prepared to help out sometimes please let the office know and your name can be added to the volunteer e-mail list where requests for help are made.
The AGM of the Trust will take place on Saturday October 12th at 2 pm in the Padgham Room in the Pavilion. The meeting usually lasts about an hour and provides the opportunity for members to ask questions and make comments. This is not the most exciting way to spend Saturday afternoon (!) but it is an important part of the management of the Trust and we would encourage as many members as possible to attend. We would like to make two rule changes and really need a quorum to be able to agree these this year.
There will be Spooky Happenings in the Woods on October 31st so come if you dare! Between 6 pm and 7.30 pm you can walk through the Woods and look for the ghosts and learn about gruesome stories from the past. Come to the Pavilion and you will be shown where to go—and bring a lantern or torch to guide you on your way.
There will be junior golf again at half term on Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th October and Friday 1st November. 10 am –12 noon for 4-8 year olds and 12.30-2.30 for 9-14 year olds. Book places now at the shop—429 2440—or call in when you’re in the woods.
Finally, a request for help to all of you who support Warley Woods. We are very proud of what the Trust has managed to achieve here over the last 10 years and we would like to do much more, but we are struggling financially. Last year with the bad weather the Trust had to use some of its small savings pot to get through the year and this year looks like it will be the same. We have cut our budgets down pretty much as far as we can, but income is not coming in to provide for our basic costs. We are always looking for ways of saving and ways of raising more money, but every source has its limit. If you enjoy Warley Woods and want it to remain run by the Community Trust, then we need more financial support from the people who use and value it. Could you give £1 a month? 50p a month? Please could you consider doing this now, rather than us having to come to you later to say we have used up all of our savings and are in crisis? We know many people give time and money now and many are already members – and thank you for that – but we need more financial help. With so many supporters just a small contribution each would make a real difference to what we can achieve. You can become a member, set up a standing order, make a donation or organise a fundraising event, and encourage others to do the same. Membership forms can be completed online here and standing order forms are available from the office. Please think about how you can help and if you have any other suggestions please let us know. THANK YOU.
