The Big Garden Birdwatch takes place next weekend, January 25th/26th, and we will be having our ‘Woodswatch’ on the Saturday, starting at 10 am. Paul Croft will be leading the walk and we will be looking for as many different species as possible. So why not come along and help spot the birds and learn more about them at the same time. Meet at the Pavilion. £1.50 for adults and free for children.
How much sponsorship money can you raise for Walk for the Woods? The walk will be on Saturday March 22nd and you can start any time between 10 am and 2 pm. We are thinking about using the money raised to replace the damaged benches and more information will be available next month. Sponsorship forms will be on this website or from the Pavilion by the end of January, so please start asking your family, friends and colleagues to help.
Stargazing is back! Our next stargazing evening will be on Friday February 7th from 7 pm to 9 pm. Let’s hope that this time the sky will be clear enough for us to use the telescopes outside, but in any event the astronomers will be making presentations in the Padgham Room and providing loads of information about the night sky and what we can look for.
Following a very successful launch in December to which all the interviewers and interviewees were invited, the Oral History Book and the DVD are now available in the shop. The book which also contains a CD costs £6 and the DVD £4. They provide fascinating reading both for those people who remember the Woods. Park and golf course in the past and those who are newer to the area.
Due to the generosity of many of our members and supporters the Trust has found the money to replace 3 of the benches damaged last summer. These benches are, we hope, sturdier than those they are replacing and the first one was put in this week. We still need to replace the other three and donations to help us do this would be very welcome.
Congratulations to Matt Sherringham one of our groundstaff who is leaving us next month for a job at Birmingham City University. Matt started with us as an apprentice and has been here for 6 years gradually learning the skills required to look after the golf course and park. We will be sorry to see him go and wish him well in his new job. As a result of Matt leaving there is a vacancy for an experienced green keeper/groundsman. We are looking for someone with relevant qualifications and experience. All the details and the application form can be found here (look at the post lower down).Closing date is January 27th.
All the tree felling in the 2 areas on Barclay Road has been completed. The wood will be removed when the contractors can get back on the site without sinking in the mud, and the piles of chippings will be spread around. The final area of work will take place next winter. We hope that now that the work has been done the trees that are left will be able to grow to their full potential and that the understory will become more diverse.
