Walk for the Woods this year aims to raise £2500! We have called it ’The Big Bench March’ as we are trying to raise enough money to replace the benches that were vandalised last summer. The generous donations at the time enabled us to replace 3 of the benches and we now need to replace the 3 others. The Walk takes place on Saturday March 22nd and you can start any time between 10 am and 2 pm from the Pavilion and walk as many of the mile circuits of the Woods as you like. Sponsor forms are available from the shop or office or you can download from this website (see the post below) If you can think of a costume that relates to benches please feel free to come dressed up! Any queries please ring the office—420 1061.
Despite the awful weather recently the Half Term Golf Camp is going ahead next week. Thanks to funding from Sandwell MBC the lessons are free but you do have to book your child(ren) in in advance. The lessons take place on Monday Wednesday and Friday and are from 10 am to 12 pm for 4-8 year olds and 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm for 9-14 year olds. Please ring or call in at the shop to book your place (429 2440).
If your child has enjoyed these sessions why not bring them along to the Junior Golf Academy? There are sessions on Saturdays and Sundays, run by coaches Greg and Nathan. More details are available from the shop or on our golf sister-website http://www.warleywoods.org.uk/golf/
Now here’s a strange request. Do you have an external door in good condition that you don’t want? We need to replace the door to the boiler room in the Pavilion and before going out to buy one we thought we’d see if anyone had one that they didn’t need. We recently got a new kettle and toilet seat by asking our volunteers and now we need a new door! If you can help please contact the office (420 1061).
Talking of boilers, we have recently had to have a new boiler fitted in the Pavilion. Thanks for those café users and Padgham Room users who have borne with us while the old boiler was dying—we can reassure you that the building is nice and warm again!
We’ve already had 2 of our regular events this year. Thanks to Paul Croft for stepping in to the breach to lead the Bird Walk in January—lots of compliments from those who took part. Thanks also to Birmingham Astronomical Society for organising the Stargazing evening. For the second time running the skies were cloudy so it was not possible to see the stars, but the talks were well received and the opportunity to see the telescopes that the group had brought along was appreciated. Let’s hope it will be a clear night for the November session.
‘Tales of Warley Woods, Smethwick—The People’s History of the People’s Park’ s the book that has been produced from the Oral History project. It is on sale in the shop for only £6 ( including a CD) and there is also a DVD of people being interviewed by local children about their memories, available for £4. A particularly nice gift for people who used to live near the Woods but have since moved away.
