The Big Bench Walk is taking place on Saturday 22nd March between 10 am and 2 pm. This year we’re trying to raise funds to replace the benches that were vandalised last summer. We have just received a grant from Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust for just over £1000 towards the cost, but we need to raise another £1500 to replace them all. So if you want to walk, pick up a sponsorship form from the shop or download one from the website and get your family and friends to sponsor you. If you can’t do the walk how about sponsoring someone else? Viv Cole, the Trust Manager, is walking and would love you to sponsor her! There’s a form you can sign in the shop in the Pavilion or you can do it online http://www.everyclick.com/warleywoodscommunitytrust
Have you ever thought about volunteering for the Woods but not been sure what it entails? We’re having a coffee morning on Saturday May 10th from 10 am to 12 noon to provide the opportunity for both prospective and current volunteers to come and meet each other and see if there is anything which they would like to get involved with. This doesn’t commit you to anything—just a chance to meet others and explore opportunities.
Some people think that volunteering is just about clearing drains and litter picking—but it’s not! On Monday April 7th at 2 pm our volunteer group will be planting wildflower seeds and plug plants amongst the beeches at the school end of Barclay Road. These have been provided by the Wildlife Trust who have said that they should be suitable for our woodland. If you want to help with this please come to the Pavilion at 2 pm. We also plan to collect the Native English Bluebell seeds from the bluebells in the Woods later in the summer. The volunteers will be shown how to distinguish between the native plants and the non-native Spanish bluebells and we will only be collecting the native seeds. Let us know if you would like to be put onto our volunteer email group so you’ll hear about the date. (email firstname.lastname@example.org )
The Easter Events will be taking place on Easter Monday, April 21st. As usual there will be Easter Egg Rolls for children and adults, the Treasure Hunt and the Painted Egg competition. Please bring a hard boiled egg if you plan to take part in the egg roll. The event starts at 11 am and registration will take place from 10.30 am at the top of the meadow by Upper St Mary’s Road.
You may have seen lots of 10s on the railings around the Woods over the last few weeks. Those of you who are members of the Trust will know that this is in anticipation of the 10th anniversary of the Trust running the park. We took over the management of the site on April 1st 2004 and it has been something of a roller coaster at times! However, those of you who remember the state of the site then will realise how much has been achieved and we think it is worth celebrating. There will be a cake, and celebrations throughout the year, so watch out for more details over the coming months.
By popular demand from regular golfers there is now an opportunity to buy an annual season ticket for the course. This pass costs £405 (or £320 for seniors) and it will entitle the owner to play golf as often as they want every day of the year. There are a limited number of season tickets available and if you want to take advantage of the offer you will need to sign up by the end of April. You will also need a passport style photo to go on the card. There are also some changes to the prices which will enable Seniors to play at discounted rates at weekends as well as in the week. Go to the golf page of the website for more details www.warleywoods.org.uk/golf
Picnic in the Park is going ahead on Sunday July 13th. We decided that although it is the day of the football World Cup final the match doesn’t take place until the evening which would still enable people to come to the Picnic first. So book the date in your diary!
