Final reminder about Picnic in the Park on Sunday July 13th. Yes we know it’s World Cup Final day but the Picnic finishes at 6 pm so you’ll have plenty of time to get back home and get ready for the match (if that’s what you want to do). Music starts at 1 pm and the Dog Show at 2 pm (registration from 1.30). Lots of stalls and other events going on throughout the afternoon. Thanks to Companion Care Vets for their continued sponsorship of this event.
We have requests for help with the Picnic.
—If you have any tombola prizes or second hand books that you would like to donate for the Trust stalls please bring them to the office/shop as soon as you can.
—If you can make cake(s) for us to sell on the Trust stall please take them to the stall on the day (from 1.30—2pm)
—If you can help with the set up in the morning, either come to the Pavilion at 8 am where we will need a few strong people to load the equipment into the van, or go to the meadow at 9 am to start putting up the marquees. We will also need help at the end of the day to get everything put away again. If you able to assist on the day it would help if you could let Viv know (420 1061) so we can allocate volunteers to the best places, but we’ll still be glad to see you even if you haven’t had a chance to contact us.
It’s Warley Day on Saturday (June 21st). This is an opportunity for golfers who play at Warley to show their skills and have a fun day together playing golf and with other competitions throughout the day. You could also win a car—if you get a hole in one! There are just a few places left and the weather is set fair so why not ring the shop and book in. (429 2440).
Tickets for Theatre in the Woods are now on sale. This year the play is Shakespeare’s Macbeth and is being staged in the meadow on Sunday August 3rd at 7.30 pm. We are really pleased to welcome back Heartbreak Theatre who have put on some great plays for us over the last few years. They are a professional company and really do bring the performance to life! Tickets are £12 each, £8 children and £35 for a family (2 adults and 2 children). Thanks to Derek Spires for sponsoring this event again. You can buy tickets in the shop or online here.
Our annual Bat Walk is on Friday August 15th starting at 8.15 pm. It will again be led by Brumbats who will bring their bat detectors for people to use. Cost is £3 for adults and free for children—this includes a drink and use of the bat detectors.
We have recently had some tree damage around the perimeter path at the edge of the golf course. It looks as if some is caused by dogs and some by knives. If you see anyone damaging the trees please call the police (101) and let us know in the office.
If you haven’t visited the shop recently do come back and see the changes! Thanks to volunteers Jason and John for their hard work. Sharon has new stock coming soon!
Thanks to everyone who walked for the woods and raised money to replace the damaged benches. Gary, pictured here, did 10 laps, as did Sharon McGuire—our superheroes! Thanks also to Crafty Muthas who donated the £138 takings from their raffle at the Bearwood Handmade Spring Fair towards the bench appeal. We have now raised £4529 and all the damaged benches will be replaced as soon as we can get them delivered and installed. A great achievement.
The Trust will be having a stall at the May Day Festival in Lightwoods Park. We are planning to run a tombola and need your unwanted gifts and other donations. These do not need to be anything big or expensive—just those things that you don’t know what to do with! Tin of baked beans is fine! If you can help please drop any donations into the shop/office over the next couple of weeks. Thank you.
You may have seen lots of ‘10s’ attached to the railings around the Woods. This is in celebration of Warley Woods Community Trust running the site for 10 years. We are really proud of this achievement and look forward to the next 10 years. There is a special cake which will be cut at the Volunteers’ thank you evening on June 2nd.
Talking of the thank you evening, we are looking for donations of wine to go with the cake! Lots of people who use the Woods do not always appreciate the amount of time and effort put in by the volunteers and this is the annual opportunity to thank them for their work. So if you are a park user and would like to acknowledge the work of the volunteers the donation of a bottle of wine would be a lovely gesture. Please leave any donations at the shop/office.
Calling all egg rollers! The Easter Egg roll will be taking place as usual on Easter Monday, April 21st, starting at 11 am. Registration, at the top of the meadow by Upper St Mary’s entrance, will be from 10.30. There will be various rolls for children, rolls for adults and the Treasure Hunt through the park back to the Pavilion.
There are 2 events to invite you to on Saturday May 10th. For those of you who are insomniacs (or keen bird watchers) there will be a Dawn Chorus Walk starting at 5 am. This will be led by Matt Hadlington and will start at the Pavilion. There will be a small charge and hot drinks will be available afterwards. Then from 10.30 until noon on the same morning there will be a Volunteers get together over a cup of coffee at the Pavilion. This is an opportunity for volunteers and prospective volunteers to come and talk about what they do and what they might do to help keep the Woods looking beautiful. Viv Cole the Trust Manager and some of the Trustees will be there, so drop in any time during these hours—everyone welcome!
The golf course is getting busier, with many compliments about the condition of the course. There is a Twilight Golf offer of £7 after 5 pm and for the first time we are offering Annual Golf Passes. These cost £405 (£320 concessions) and give unlimited golf on the course throughout the year. Equipment hire and lessons are also available so contact the golf shop (429 2440) to book a tee time or talk to a member of staff.
The Junior Golf Academy is getting into full swing again and there are Saturday and Sunday clubs with Greg and a Sunday club with Nathan. For more details ring or call in at the shop (429 2440) or look on the website www.warleywoods.org.uk/golf
