The recent grant from Heritage Lottery Fund has provided money to improve much of Warley Woods, but one significant aspect of the park has been left unrestored. The Edwardian drinking fountain was donated by a local businessman in 1907, soon after Warley Woods opened as a public park. It is now the last remaining structure from this era but it has gradually fallen further and further into disrepair, while the rest of the park has begun to look renewed and love.

The Trust proposes to restore the fountain, repair the masonry, renew the granite dedication plaque and recreate the gothic canopy. We also plan to create an attractive landscaped setting for the fountain, with a seating area and viewing platform. Park users and members of the public will be consulted on the designs for this area. Health and Safety regulations mean that it cannot be restored as a working drinking fountain, but the Trust will investigate whether the base troughs can be connected to a water supply, to provide drinking water for dogs.
The total cost of restoration and landscaping has been estimated at £75,000, and the Trust has been successful in securing a substantial grant towards this sum. Further grants will also be sought, but we are keen to invite donations from members of the public who wish to support the restoration project, particularly since such contributions will provide other funders with evidence of public support for the project.

If you would like to make a contribution to a special fund for this project then please send a donation to the Trust Office. All donors will receive a letter of thanks and donors of over £100 will be sent a special certificate. All donors will be invited to the public consultation on the design for the landscaping.
If you would like to make a donation to this appeal, please send a cheque made out to “Warley Woods Community Trust” to The Pavilion, Lightwoods Hill, Smethwick, B67 5ED. |
