Easter Eggs Roll Again – Monday 25th April

Warley Woods Community Trust will be holding its special Easter event on Easter Monday 25th April.

There will be an Easter Egg roll down the meadow’s long bank (called the death run in snowy weather) with prizes for the egg-roller that rolls the furthest.   If you have a decorated egg, then you can enter the Painted Egg Competition.

There will also be an Easter Egg Trail with clues which will lead visitors through the Woods to the Pavilion where hot cross buns and hot drinks will be available (alongside normal café fayre) and other fun eggy activities.  There will be  a special raffle for a giant chocolate bunny, donated by Marks and Spencer.

Viv Cole, Trust Manager said “This is our fourth year of the Egg Roll and it has become a really popular event.  Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the fun – whether you are artistic, competitive, or just want an Easter stroll through the woods.”

Anyone who would like to take part should bring their hard boiled eggs (hen, duck or ostrich are all eligible) to the Upper St Mary’s entrance of Warley Woods at 11.00am.  Entry into all activities is £1.

BBQ Charcoal Now on Sale in the Shop

Did you know that only 5% of the charcoal sold in the UK comes from British Woodlands?  The rest is imported and its origin isn’t regulated.  British Charcoal is a sustainable product which is produced as part of sustainable woodland management.  It is a quality product; does not need any extra lighting fuel and is at ready to use after 15 minutes.
Warley Woods Community Trust is pleased to be able to offer this excellent charcoal, produced in Worcestershire by Chris Atkins: coppicer, woodsman and green wood worker.
On sale in the shop at the Pavilion.  £8 for 3kg bag.  Park close by – open until 7pm or even later (0121 429 2440)
The income from sales of everything in the shop goes to fund the management and maintenance of the park and golf course

Walk for the Woods is a great success

The weather was great and lots of people came out to show their support and raise money to help Warley Woods look good.  Around 100 people took part – running, pushing buggies, walking their dog and few rather oddly dressed individuals turned up too.  Not all of the sponsor money has come in yet, but we are hoping to break last year’s total of £1,500.  More pictures on our Facebook Page

Helping Hands for the Woods

Today we had a new group of willing volunteers giving time to keep Warley Woods looking good.  They were a team of staff from “Community Spaces” at Groundwork UK.  They are the team that administer grants on behalf of the Big Lottery for improving green spaces.  They were actually the funder for The Wilderness and they came en masse to help maintain it.  They were a lovely group and even left cake behind for us!

We are often host to team days or away days of this kind.   The massive person power they bring really helps to get a signficiant piece of maintenance done, all in one go.  It also helps our own volunteers see improvements being made and letting them move on to the next thing on the never ending list.  This year already we have been visited by Ernst and Young and other groups are booking up too.  Including the third year running for Virgin Trains stalwarts, the second year running for University of Birmingham and newcomers Zurich Insurance.  Thank you to all of them.  There is still room for more and lots more work to come – bring your team down to Warley Woods for the day!

March Update

The final plans have now been agreed to improve the drainage in the Children’s Playground and the work will start shortly.  We hope that it does not cause too much inconvenience and that as a result of the work the playground will not have as many puddles as it does at present.

We will again be organising patrols in the park during the evenings this spring and summer. It is useful to have volunteers out on a regular basis who can talk to the members of the public and keep their eyes and ears open for any problems. People go out in pairs for an hour or so and  we are looking for some additional members to assist those who have said they will help.  If you want to find out more about this, and what the level of commitment is, please ring Viv at the office and she’ll give you more details(420 1061).

On Tuesday May 3rd at 7.30pm there will be a meeting for anyone who is interested in looking at the biodiversity of the site and ways in which we can improve this.  This will take the form of an open discussion and anyone with an interest in this area of the work of the Trust will be welcome.  The meeting will be in The Pavilion
